Chapter 18

Time to Grow Up

Rose found herself confined within the bustling cafeteria, her anticipation—a palpable thing stirring the air around her. After having undergone the rigorous scrutiny of Dr. Culpepper’s physical and mental testing, she waited, awash with nervous energy. Where were Josephine and Blaine? What of Soal, George, Bronwyn, Seth, and Ariuk? The whereabouts of her companions seemed to be an enigma wrapped in mystery.

As she sat there, her heart beating like a hummingbird’s wings, she tried tamping down the torrent of fears that cascaded through her mind—a tapestry of dread that she couldn’t shake off. An uneasy sense of foreboding took hold of her. A sixth sense, perhaps, her subconscious mind screaming for attention, warning her of danger. The unknowingness gnawed deeper into her psyche.

Soon, the cafeteria teemed with many individuals, blending familiar and unfamiliar faces. Some were ethereal beings, mirroring Ariuk’s alien angel grandeur. Anxious chatter buzzed, bouncing off the walls.

George mirrored her concerns as he approached.

Suddenly, Soal raised his voice and said, “I extend my gratitude to all for your patience and cooperation during these trying times.” His words reverberated around the room, grasping the attention of everyone present. “We’re planning an extraction mission to the Forbidden City of Gold to rescue Josephine and Blaine.”

The rush of whispers suggested that only the brave or foolish tread there, not for faint-hearted explorers. A few gasps and a hush fell upon the room. The silence was as taut as a drawn bowstring.

Rose’s knowledge of the Forbidden City of Gold was scant at best. She drew most from her studies on El Dorado and wasn’t sure if they were the same.

Rose had signed up with the organization looking for a job, a stepping stone after college. But life was strange, with a comical sense of humor thrust into the heart of something so vast and complex it dwarfed her initial expectations. Adrenaline surged through her veins. Her heart pounded like a drum. Uncertainty clouded her mind as she stood at the edge of a precipice of something exciting yet undoubtedly nefarious.

Soal said, “I’ve secured permission for a search and rescue operation from the otherworldly realm. To our mortal friends, fear not. Each team member will imbue extraordinary abilities to counteract Persephone and her minions.”

At his words, Ariuk came forth, and his hand rose. With a snap of his fingers, a city map materialized out of thin air, glowing with an eerie light. With the gravity of the situation, he said, “The city, and its hidden treasures, also possesses an ancient curse that could result in the deaths of immortals and mortals alike. Remember, if something looks too good to be true, it’s probably a trap. The lesser gods have portal doors, as do we, and only one portal door leads to the Almighty. We must protect His sanctity.”

Soal explained further about the Cherubim, their Heavenly ranks, and the form they might take according to the prophet Ezekiel’s account. A whirlwind of information left Rose spinning. Her mind teemed with questions.
